Did you know that 27% of U.S. adults aged 60 and over live alone? That’s significantly higher than their peers in other countries, according to the Pew Research Center. Despite concerns about mental health risks, many older adults prefer to be solo agers and wouldn’t have it any other way.
Living solo isn’t feasible for everyone, but for those who can and choose to stay in their own homes, it represents cherished independence. The desire for personal space and independence remains as vital for individuals in their 80s as it is for those in their 30s. Thanks to modern technology, this aging lifestyle is more accessible than ever before, with medical alert systems, doorbell cameras, telehealth services, and deliveries for meals and pharmaceuticals enhancing safety and convenience.
Choosing to live alone often reflects a deep-seated preference where one can enjoy the freedom to make their own decisions without considering others’ opinions or schedules. This includes simple pleasures like controlling the TV remote, eating meals of their choice, and enjoying the peace and quiet of their own space.
However, managing expenses on a single income can be challenging, especially with the rising cost of living. Many find the trade-off worth it for the independence they gain.
Safety is another primary concern. Loved ones worry about the risks of falls, injuries, or medical emergencies with no one around to help. While some older adults are resourceful and self-sufficient, others may face challenges that make independent living difficult. Community support and nearby family can help mitigate some risks, but the balance between ensuring safety and respecting autonomy remains delicate.
The choice to age in place and live alone is deeply personal. However, early conversations about future needs, resources, and planning can ensure you age safely. Don’t wait until circumstances force you to react, leaving you with limited options. Be proactive today by setting the stage for a more positive and purposeful aging experience.
